Fundraising is like running a marathon. The first few miles are awesome but eventually the fatigue sets in. A marathon runner is constantly taking in data over the course of 26.2 miles and sometimes they are forced to change their strategy mid-race. They’re analyzing how they feel (both mentally and physically), keeping track of their heart rate, and most importantly - they are keeping the goal of finishing strong at the top of their mind. Fundraisers are no different. The first few asks to a donor are easy but a lot of major gift officers are hit with donor fatigue and forced to change strategy. They need data to reprioritize their portfolios, figure out who can make warm introductions, and most importantly – they are keeping the goal of raising money to help move the organization’s mission forward. What do you do in a marathon when things get tough? You take in more calories, you drink water, you stop to stretch if you have to, but you keep pushing forward. What do fundraisers do when things get tough? They work to better understand who their donors are and what matters to them. And most importantly they keep pushing forward.
