Background

About Tareyn Johnson

Throughout both my personal and professional life I am continually learning and being inspired by the world around me. I seek guidance and find strength in my culture, as a member of Georgina Island First Nation, and the land. I have worked in Indigenous education and services throughout my professional life and have dedicated my efforts into developing an exceptional post-secondary experience for Indigenous students and staff through consensus-based decision making and community consultation. I developed the Official Indigenization Plan for Georgian College that has been integrated into the Official Strategic Plan 2016-2021 and an Indigenous Action Plan for the University of Ottawa, currently in its second edition. which is embedded in the uOttawa 2030 Transformation Strategic Plan, Objective #4 under the pillar titled,"More Connected." https://transformation2030.uottawa.ca/en I provide leadership to Indigenous Affairs and Senior Administration to enhance existing services and programs, identify and develop new initiatives. I am dedicated to the development and integration of Indigenous communities in university life through the Indigenous Education Council and the Standing Committee on Indigenous Affairs. I am also a part-time professor in the Institute for Indigenous Research and Studies (IIRS) within the Faculty of Arts. I have developed Indigenous Knowledge Sharing sessions for faculty and staff to ensure they are informed and supported throughout the integration of Indigenous knowledge. Physical enhancements are essential to the process, as is an open dialogue to ensure a cooperative and supportive environment. I have also developed Indigenous programming and work as a faculty member, teaching Indigenous knowledge, at both the college and university level.
