Background
About Tarryn Lee
Tarryn is a multimodal theatre and voice trainer, creative facilitator and director. With a diverse range of experience, she has lectured in Acting, Theatre-making, Voice and Speech, and Scenography and Theatre Technology. She was awarded a Masters degree in Drama and Film Research cum laude from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2017. As a founding member and co-director of Drama for Life Playback Theatre, she has been instrumental in its development since its inception in 2008. Recently, Tarryn co-directed the 'Roots and Routes' Playback Theatre International Conference held in South Africa in December 2023, and led the Marketing & Publicity portfolio, for this groundbreaking event that for the first time took place on African soil. In 2017, Tarryn completed Playback Leadership training in Brazil, becoming an accredited Playback Trainer through the Centre of Playback. She is deeply engaged in sharing her expertise, co-leading Playback short course training at Wits University annually and serving as the Regional Representative of Africa for the International Playback Theatre Network. She heads the Playback for Youth portfolio as part of the DFL Playback Theatre company's mission. Theatre for transformation, social awareness and active citizenship drive Tarryn's Playback experience, application, and teaching. Tarryn's passion for cultural exchange and performance has taken her across the globe, from Cuba to Bulgaria, India, Russia, Belarus, and Denmark, where she has led workshops, presented at conferences, and collaborated with international theatre artists. Her journey as a Dramatic Arts teacher has enriched her understanding of diverse perspectives, curricula development, and youth development through the arts. Beyond her work in education and performance, Tarryn evaluates post-graduate theatre projects, examines performance arts and speech and drama programmes for an international examination board, and serves as a short course lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand.
