About Tathagata Mitra

Hello, there! You already know my name, but I also go by Tom. I am a writer, storyteller, wordsmith, and filmmaker. I wrote my first book when I was 17, to impress a girl. The relationship didn’t last, but at the end of it I realized two things: 1. No girl is worth writing two books on. I am good when it comes to weaving together words to create tall tales. In 2016, I joined Dentsu Webchutney. The life of a young copywriter is full of failures, disappointments, overwork, underpayment, and laughing at your boss’s dim-witted jokes. Even in all that, I managed to work for brands like Canon, Honda, Mamy Poko Pants, Engage, and Catch. At Wunderman, I worked with Microsoft, HSBC, Del Monte, Kellogg’s, and GSK. I ended up making more than 50 campaigns for Microsoft in 8 months. But I wanted more. So I switched from digital to mainline. I joined Tempest Advertising in early 2018. As a mainline copywriter, I had to deconstruct my entire writing style. I worked with brands like Adarsh Group, IFIM, Religare, Eyespa, and N9 World Technologies. However, only writing for brands was never enough for me - which is why I created social campaigns for my friends in NGOs. I went back to fiction writing and forayed into what I consider my one true love - FILMMAKING. Good stories are driven by character but great stories are driven by insights. I learned that in advertising and I applied that in creating Squabble Productions with my partner. Our documentary ‘Yognat & Me’ and our forthcoming web-series ‘Mayavi’ reflect that. I am currently preoccupied with growth hacking and stretching the boundaries of my creativity. My short story ‘Hercules’ is a crack at just that. I am even discovering ways to foray into an unexplored avenue - writing comic books. I write and I ride - with my Royal Enfield Himalayan whom I have named Buckbeak (Bucky for short). Riding helps me think. Thinking helps me write. Writing gets me paid, and that buys petrol. It’s a beautiful cycle.
