About Taylor Ross

First class BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science graduate from Northumbria University, Newcastle, accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). During my three years of study, I gained specialist laboratory skills and developed an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles underlying pathogenesis of disease, and strategies for their investigation and treatment. During my undergraduate degree, I completed a year-long placement practicing as a trainee Biomedical Scientist specialising in Cellular Pathology at North Tyneside General Hospital, Northumbria NHS Trust, which I continued part-time during my final year of study and am now eligible for registration by the Health Care and Professions Council (HCPC). I gained competency in Medical Laboratory Assistant tasks, including booking in, assisting with trimming, and discard of specimens according to the Human Tissue Act. To further my training I became competent in fundamental skills required by Biomedical Scientists in histology, notably embedding, sectioning by microtomy and special staining of a range of tissue types. Through demonstrating my ability to work independently in the laboratory as a trainee scientist, I was granted approval from NHS Research and Development to carry out a successful, independent service development project, which investigated for the most beneficial method of decalcification for human femoral head samples to ease diagnosis by cellular pathologists and secondly to decrease turnaround times faced by the laboratory, to benefit patient care. I have recently completed a Masters by Research in Cancer degree with Distinction at Newcastle University Medical School. During which I joined Klarity Health, exploring new career avenues by interning as a medical writer to produce various scientifically detailed articles on chronic health conditions, preventive health and health in general as part of a wider health-tech strategy team to educate the public and improve global health. As part of my research project, I worked alongside Leukaemia Research Cytotenetics Group analysing clinical trial data which identified the genetic landscape of T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in adults, and concluded correlations with clinical and demographic features.
