About Taymour Bouran

I graduated from UBC in 2016, and started my teaching career at ABS Jordan. I learned, by teaching, my desire to continuously pursue new truths and perspectives of historical topics. I finished my Masters in history (2021) and continued my development in pedagogy at the UWC ISAK Japan. From 2022 at ISAK, I am became increasingly passionate in taking new approaches to history education. While working as a teacher, I decided to enrol as a PhD candidate, at a university in Tokyo, to align my practice with further research in educational theories. My research focuses on uncovering deeper understandings of history as a means of addressing modern day challenges. I aimed to enhance my history student’s abilities in comparative analysis, by introducing a wide range of history education policies and practices across different contexts; gathered from my university classes and attendance to research conferences. In Theory of Knowledge, I used my research focus on indigenous communities to show how students can engage with the past in a way that applies knowledge to develop leadership skills in real-world contexts. In addition to applying experience and education into professional development, I have also developed a deep appreciation for game-based learning as a transformative tool for both students and educators. This type of pedagogy enables participants to immerse themselves in simulations that not only recreate historical contexts but also spark profound internal insights. I aim to capture the joy-filled experiences that mirror the curiosity of childhood learning, while contributing to a lifelong skill in exploration and intellectual growth. I believe that weaving this sense of joy and engagement into education cultivates a lasting appreciation for inquiry and critical thinking that transcends the boundaries of the classroom. Learning beyond the classroom has also profoundly shaped my philosophy and personal growth. Through my travels with my wife, from hiking through remote trails to exploring new parts of the country we live in, I have gained insights into the deep history behind mountains, cities, and temples. These encounters reinforce my awareness that education extends beyond the classroom, it lives in the experiences of people and places that challenge us to grow more resilience, adaptive, and appreciative of different perspectives. They inspire me to guide students and teachers alike toward a mindset of adventure, empathy, and lifelong learning to embrace a turbulent world with confidence and purpose.
