About Ted Hirning

I began my teaching career with the St. Helens School District in 1998. I taught 6th grade for twenty years at a number of schools within the district; Yankton Elementary, St. Helens Middle School, Columbia City Elementary, and McBride Elementary. I accepted the role of Athletic Director at St. Helens High School in 2018. My coaching career includes 5 years of Middle School football, 8 years at Middle School for boys and girls basketball. 10 years of football at St. Helens High School, and 1 year of both basketball and baseball at SHHS. I have a BA in Elementary Ed. with a minor in history/social studies from Central Connecticut State University. I received my Masters in Administration from Portland State University. In 2014 I retired as a commissioned officer with 24 years of service, including three deployments to Iraq in the US Army and Washington National Guard. My educational philosophy centers around keeping our students engaged. I believe in encouraging students to be creative and open minded in their exploration of learning; instilling a belief of lifelong learning is imperative. I value building open and honest relationships with my staff and students, striving to be a role model for both. I am well experienced in technology platforms of Microsoft and Google. I have experience in educational platforms to include, Synergy, Google, Ascellus, Edmentum, and Canvas.
