About Ted Johanson

I have been working for 10+ years in industry with fermentation process development, and engineering of E. coli strains for industrial conditions. Key tasks of the work include: • Elucidating the connection between genotype, process conditions, microbial physiology and process performance. • Using this knowledge to adapt high-throughput strain screening methods, and to design fermentation processes and metabolically engineer microbial strains to increase the performance in industrial scale. • Develop kinetic models to facilitate process optimization. • Develop scale-down lab models to test and validate strains and processes. • Transferring and upscaling strains and processes to manufacturing scale (1, 50 and 450 m3 vessels). • Leading projects for the development and implementation of new technologies. • Supervising bachelor, master and PhD students, who are doing their theses in precision fermentation at dsm-firmenich. Much of the work is done cross-functionally in close collaboration with the fermentation group at the manufacturing site, but also with the strain development, analytics, down-stream processing, IP and regulatory affairs teams. In addition, I also engage in collaboration with other scientists across dsm-firmenich, with academic institutions, and with other commercial partners. The academic collaborations are ongoing, and I continue to publish papers when there is an opportunity.
