About Tekeisha Mitchell

Dr. Tekeisha Mitchell is the principal of Lowe’s Grove Magnet Middle School in Durham, N.C. She has been in the field of education for over 23 years and has worked in Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools, Vance County Schools, and Durham Public Schools. She started her career as an afterschool group leader. She has worked as a teacher assistant, teacher, assistant principal, and principal at both the elementary and middle school levels. She also taught SLN-GED classes at the federal prison in Butner. During her seven-year as principal of Burton Elementary Schools she raised test scores from 29.2% of students on grade level to 73.6% of students on grade level. At Lowe’s Grove she has raised the ABC grade level and has met the yearly growth goal. Under her leadership, Lowe’s Grove has been named STEM School of the Year US2020, Magnet Schools of America School of Excellence (highest award), and NC Association of Middle Level Education School to Watch. As the daughter of the late Peggy Ford-Wilson, a middle school English and Social Studies teacher, she was taught to value education. Her mother would always say, Baby girl, it’s not the kind words or the awards you receive that matter, but the work that you do. She would then say, “may the work I’ve done, speak for me.” Raised in Winton, N.C, Tekeisha now lives with her husband Darrin, son Ian, and daughter Makayla in Durham, N.C. Her motto is, “If I can help someone along my way, then my life will not be in vain”.
