My Nursing Philosophy Nursing is an obligation that one chooses for their life because they deeply care about the well-being of others. Nursing is a responsibility that includes taking on the role of a teacher, counselor, mediator, and caregiver to meet the physical, mental, and social needs of the individuals a nurse cares for. Nursing is having passion that drives one to go over and beyond to make sure individuals are able to live a healthy life by providing education, resources, and meeting the overall needs of individuals that they are caring for. The unique passion a nurse has comes from within and can not be learned. Nurses are born with a passion that is unique to the profession and it is shown through every action they take to make a difference in the lives of their patients and their families. I chose nursing because as a young child I always naturally involved myself in helping others solve their problems and nurturing them when they were hurt or I felt someone needed help physically and/or emotionally. As a child, I was always so curious about the complexity of the human body and loved to learn about pregnancy and the reproductive system. I have been a Labor & Delivery nurse for over a year and a half and I believe I have made a difference in my patients’ lives during such a vulnerable and special moment in their life. I plan to impact society through nursing by always putting my patient’s needs first and making sure they always feel safe and heard. I have cared for patients from all different social, ethnic, and financial backgrounds, and I get to know my patients and try my best to build a connection with them so that I am able to meet their needs, understand their wants and meet their realistic expectations and educate them so that they feel empowered and know that they are in control of their health and birth. Maternal health in underserved communities means a lot to me and I will continue to gain experience and learn all that I can so that I am able to give back to my community by eventually working with different organizations within the Washington, D.C. area to provide education and care to women that lack the resources to receive adequate care during pregnancy. All women deserve to receive exceptional care from skilled, passionate healthcare providers. I am determined to continue to make a positive impact in society by using my knowledge, passion and skills to provide care to patients and show them that nurses will always acknowledge their unique needs and advocate for the best outcomes.
