Hi, I’m Terry Dillon — a former senior AFL executive turned community sport advocate, passionate about building stronger, more sustainable grassroots clubs across Australia. After two decades leading high-performance teams and managing $50M organisations like Collingwood and Hawthorn Football Clubs, I’ve seen the impact that good governance, culture, and strategy can have — not just on business performance, but on people and communities. But I’ve also seen what happens when those things break down. That’s why I shifted focus from elite sport to the grassroots, where the challenges are just as real — but the resources are far more limited. Through CLUBMAP, I now work with local councils, leagues, and governing bodies to empower thousands of clubs around the country. We help reduce the burden on volunteers, improve governance, and strengthen the systems behind the sport — so clubs don’t just survive, but thrive. Three common challenges I see in community sport: 1. Volunteer burnout and revolving doors – Most clubs rely on just a few passionate people who are often overwhelmed, under-resourced, and unsure where to turn. Governance and planning gaps – Many clubs lack the structure and tools to make smart, long-term decisions or manage risk effectively. Disconnected support systems – Councils and peak bodies want to help, but don’t always have the tools to reach all clubs efficiently or consistently.
