About Terry Irwin

Experience is knowledge you gain just after you need it. I've gained my fair share of experience in technology, but also in team management (especially with remote, international teams) and in the business contexts in which I've delivered solutions. Understanding "why" and constantly challenging my own assumptions have been invaluable in bringing my hard-won "experience" to new situations. In the past, I have assumed: • that a goal of an e-commerce system was to maximize sales. Nope. In a niche international context I learned that too many sales was an annoyance. • that an application I built as a temp hire would be used. Nope. Its business purpose was to goad a jealous IT department into writing it themselves.(They would have refused otherwise.) • that "you must not do that" was clear direction. Nope. Not when given to a non-native English speaker.(A well-educated German, in this case.) I am often asked if I miss film editing - working collaboratively with a director, a script, and film-in-the-can to materialize the director's vision. I don't miss it, because it was the collaborative work that was so enjoyable. It's how I work with clients and teams today - striving to understand together "what" and "why" and "how" so that as a team we may produce an elegant, satisfying solution.
