My article on working with people with a psychiatric diagnosis will be published in the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) journal Healthcare Counselling and Psychotherapy Journal, October 2025 edition. If you are a psychologist, psychotherapist, counsellor or other mental health professional, you know the importance of deeply understanding the people you work with. Many mental health training courses - e.g. in psychology, psychotherapy, counselling - do not equip therapists with a sufficiently comprehensive understanding of depression and the other psychiatric diagnoses. Often, the medical model accepted within such training courses without due critique, without adequate consideration of a trauma-informed and psychologically-grounded foundation. My courses address this gap in mental health training. My mix of skills - physician x 35 yrs; psychotherapist x 20 years; best-selling mental health author; mental health educator; provider of a recovery-oriented mental health service; nine yrs on Irish government-appointed mental health expert groups - enables me to provide mental health professionals with an unusually broad and integrated understanding. I experienced considerable trauma in my childhood and teenage years. I qualified as a medical doctor in 1982, and happily worked as a GP until Perhaps influenced by my own experiences of trauma earlier in life, I progressively noticed major flaws within the medical approach to mental health. Deeply unsatisfied as a GP by I wanted more meaning and authenticity in my work. I passionately believed that we could - and must, in the public interest - do better. I retrained as a psychotherapist and ceased working as a GP. By 2003, I was providing a recovery-oriented mental health service, written a best-selling book,'Beyond Prozac', and was appointed to Irish government mental health expert groups.
