About Terry S.

Hi, I’m Terry! I’m a woodworker, writer, and experienced professional based in Kankakee, IL. I was born in Michigan, grew up in Ohio and Michigan, did a short stint in Nebraska, and now I’m back to my Great Lakes roots in Illinois - I suppose I’m what you might call a “pan-Midwesterner.” I enjoy traveling, fishing, gardening, taking walks around the park with my wife Emily and our dog Taako, traveling to new places, and sipping a well-made craft cocktail on a sunny patio. Writing was my first passion. As a kid, I wrote endlessly. I spent hours and hours writing poems, songs, journal entries, narrative-based computer games - you name it! That love of writing has stuck with me throughout my life. Attending Bowling Green State University, I struggled to pick a major (imagine asking 18-year-olds to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives!) until I realized the obvious answer - Creative Writing. To supplement my skills, I added a minor in marketing, and learned how to communicate business value to a wide variety of audiences. My choice of degree program has served me well through a variety of career roles - customer service, marketing, fundraising, public policy, and any number of “other duties as assigned” that come with working in the nonprofit field. It turns out, being able to effectively communicate a message to an audience is a very transferrable skill!
