About Thanos Athanasopoulos

Since 2003 Thanos Athanasopoulos has been practicing Architecture and Urban Design in Greece and the United States. Throughout his 20 years of experience he has worked for projects ranging from small scale residential to large scale commercial, transportation, research and hospitality developments. He joined AETER Architects in 2015 and since 2022 he hold the position of Design Director Partner. He has been a leading member of the design team for several projects including the iconic Astir Marina Redevelopment Project in Vouliagmeni, Attica. From 2005-2015 his architectural practice Architect Thanos Athanasopoulos Works was based in Athens, Greece. He completed commissions ranging from private residencies to leisure and retail developments and received numerous awards. Earlier in his career Athanasios worked at the New York - based firm of architect Rafael Vinoly, contributing to internationally acclaimed projects such as the London 20 Fenchurch Street tower and the Carrasco International Airport. Although his designs demonstrate much of the character of contemporary south European “white” modernism, he has developed an interest in the innovative use of traditional building materials and construction methods commonly associated with historical architecture. His latest designs also explore smooth, geometrically intricate formal and spatial transitions between the existing urban fabric and the new building that transcend fragmentation towards more integrated wholes.
