About Theodore Henry

Ted Henry is a Professor of Environmental Toxicology at Heriot-Watt University. He is the Global Head of the Institute of Life and Earth Sciences in the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastruture and Society at HWU, and Director of the Centre for Master’s Training (CMT) within the Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold Chain (ACES), Kigali, Rwanda. He leads the ENABLE Scholarship Program (https://enable-scholarships.site.hw.ac.uk/) designed to enhance the ability of communities within emerging economies to address United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs). Principal investigator and co-investigator on research projects as Director of the Ecotoxicology and Pathophysiology of Aquatic Organisms Research Program (https://epaquatic.org/). Ted was recruited on the Global Platform for Research Leaders and joined the School of Life Sciences (now the Institute of Life and Earth Sciences) at HWU in 2013. In 2017, he was promoted to Professor of Environmental Toxicology. He has served HWU on secondment as the Deputy Provost of HWU Malaysia; as Deputy Executive Dean and subsequently as Executive Dean of the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS); as lead of the EGIS Athena SWAN program; and lead of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) Unit of Assessment 7 (Earth Systems and Environment). Ted received a Bachelor of Arts (1992) in Aquatic Biology from the University of California Santa Barbara, and subsequently worked as a fisheries extension/rural community development agent in the Akebou region of Togo West Africa as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer (1992-1994). He received a Master of Science (1998) from the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures at Auburn University (AL) with thesis research on the aquatic toxicology of acid mine drainage mixing zones in warmwater streams. His doctoral research in the Fish Disease Laboratory at Auburn University investigated fish pathology associated with exposure to electric fields. He investigated the ecotoxicology of pharmaceutical substances as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA; and his first academic position was at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee, where he continues as an Adjunct Professor. In 2008, he came to the UK as a Research Council of the UK Academic Fellow leading to a Readership appointment at the University of Plymouth before coming to HWU.
