About Theron Terhune

Research Interests: Theron has a diverse set of research interests whereby his research experience ranges from demographic and genetic assessment to translocation of northern bobwhite quail with an emphasis on evaluating the efficacy of pragmatic habitat management practices, such as prescribed burning and timber thinning, to promote conservation and restoration of functional ecosystems at local, regional and national scales. Teaching: Theron is adjunct faculty and/or a faculty cooperator at the University of Georgia, University of West Florida, Mississippi State University, Delaware State University and Washington College. He currently teaches Python Programming; Beginning, intermediate and Advanced GIS; and, population/demographic analysis in wildlife and natural resources. Apps, Maps and Other Technology: Theron has extensive experience working with GIS and RS (remote Sensing) and is a certified GISp (GIS Professional) and, for fun, he teaches basic GIS/RS courses and GIS programming. Recently, he utilized his keen interest in and experience with GIS, Python programming, database and web development to produce a GIS-centric database which now serves as the backbone of the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative (NBCI), a national strategic plan to recover Northern Bobwhites, functional grassland ecosystems and grassland obligate birds. He enjoys developing new conservation resource products such as apps (e.g, BirdsUP app, BBA app, and Post-Burn app) and maps to equip land managers and resource biologists with tools to facilitate effective management decisions. Other Specialties: As odd as it may seem, Theron enjoys statistical analysis and, in particular, likes the challenge of designing (or using) novel data analysis techniques to improve understanding and management of wildlife and natural resources. He has vast knowledge in quantitative ecology such as Occupancy Modeling, Distance Sampling, Survival Analysis, and Habitat and Resource Selection.
