About Thiago Herick de

Thiago Herick de Sa is an experienced public health professional specializing in urban health, transport, and age-friendly environments. Since joining the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017, he has played a key role in shaping global policies and guidance to create healthier, more inclusive cities and communities. Currently leading WHO’s work on age-friendly environments, he coordinates the Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, develops strategic guidance for National Age-Friendly Programs, and drives global action to support healthy ageing through sustainable urban planning and policy integration. Previously, he contributed to WHO’s work on urban health and transport, leading the development of key resources such as the Urban Health Research Agenda (2022), the Sourcebook on Integrating Health in Urban and Territorial Planning (2020), and the HEAT tool for active transport (2021). Before joining WHO, Thiago worked as a researcher and university professor in Brazil and the UK, focusing on public health, physical activity, and environmental determinants of health. His research has been published in high-impact scientific journals, contributing to the evidence base for urban health policies and active living strategies. He has also mentored students and professionals in public health and urban planning, bridging the gap between academia and policy implementation. Thiago holds a degree in Sports Science and both Master’s and PhD degrees in Public Health. He began his career as a physical educator, working with older adults in hospitals, primary care, and home care settings in Brazil. His multidisciplinary expertise allows him to connect research, policy, and practice, fostering innovative approaches to creating healthier, more sustainable communities worldwide.
