Background

About Thomas A. Gorr

Name: Thomas A. Gorr Degrees: Diploma (M.S.) in Biology; PhD in Life Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.); Venia Legendi / Habilitation degree (PD) in Comparative Physiology. Positions: a) Senior Group-Leader at Institute of Veterinary Physiology (IVP), University of Zurich (2005-today); b) Head of Research at the Center of Regenerative Medicine (ReMedi) at the University of Zurich (2015-2016); c) Head of the Hematological-Oncological diagnostic laboratory at the Center for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, University Medical Center Freiburg, Germany (2009-2015). Research- Independent research at IVP with a focus on hypoxia/metabolism-centered questions - Aim: understanding hypoxia tolerance adaptations - two main endeavors: • Biological and clinical significance of myoglobin when expressed de novo not in myocytes, but in luminal cells of healthy breast parenchyma and mammary carcinomas; • Signaling pathways underlying the emergence and maintenance of hypometabolic states and role of these signals in promoting therapy resistance in cancer cells. Background: Hypometabolism = down-regulated energy expenditure during times of O2 deprivation to re-balance with diminished energy supply. Vision: Translating pharmacological induction of hypometabolic states, through inhalation/infusion of sulfides (e.g. H2S), with and without application of hypothermia, into human or veterinary clinics for advanced procedures during organ transplantation, blood product storage and critical care interventions. For more details see review on Hypometabolism at Teaching Experiences- Have a natural aptitude for, and love of, teaching and communicating science - Instructor at universities in the US, Germany and Switzerland - Lectures in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Human Physiology for students of the Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences. Thank you for your interest in my scientific career and interests.
