About Thomas Curran

I am a highly motivated molecular ecologist, specialising in the application of genetic techniques for surveillance of arthropod communities, with a particular focus on mosquitoes. During my research career I have developed harmonised arthropod monitoring approaches in collaboration with government agencies, academic institutions, and community representatives. My research background includes the application of PCR and Sanger sequencing technologies to identify Irish mosquito diversity; the design, optimisation and application of novel real-time PCR assays for target mosquito-species detection from various sample types; and the use of Next-Generation Sequencing to identify the diet of the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) in Ireland. My work has allowed to acquire the skills and knowledge to address real-world environmental challenges and contribute meaningfully to scientific inquiry and conservation efforts. Currently I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Innsbruck where I am applying DNA-based methodologies to catalogue Austrian insect and plant biodiversity from bulk insect samples and flower washing techniques (i.e. environmental DNA).
