About Thomas Harvey

I am a hard-working, friendly individual with a great enthusiasm for geoscience and its value to society. As Science and Funding Officer at the Geological Society, I support activity relating to thematic areas of the Society's Science strategy, in addition to supporting the administration of our grants and funding programmes. Within this role I am keen to discuss ideas for activities relating to high impact geoscience topics that could be supported by workshops, meetings or public lectures. After completing a BSc in Geology at Royal Holloway, University of London, I undertook an MSc in Geoscience at UCL. My PhD in Planetary Science at the University of Manchester focussed on the presence of Fe,Ni metal in chondrite meteorite and lunar impact melt samples. I used geochemical analysis techniques to investigate the effects of impact melting on the composition and microstructure of such metal in chondritic and lunar settings. I also investigated the physical properties of meteorites, using photogrammetry-derived 3-D models of meteorites to determine bulk density. I have a keen interest in space research, as well as policymaking relating to future space activities.(Field experience is detailed in course descriptions).
