About Thomas Hill

From 1972-2002, I was employed (progressively) as Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor of Anthropology at the University of Northern Iowa. From 1987-1991, I served as the Head of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology. As such, I administered an academic dept. consisting of 20 full-time faculty and four major educational programs: an M.A. in sociology and three undergraduate majors in anthropology, sociology, and criminology. Responsibilities included program planning, resource development, budget development and implementation, faculty evaluation, public relations, management and coordination of curricular offerings, general management of a department serving more than 200 majors, and teaching one course a semester. I received the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences' Outstanding Teaching Award for Tenured Faculty in 1994. In addition to my field research experiences in Oklahoma (summer 1964), Seattle (1968-69), and Sioux City, Iowa (1970-71), I also engaged in ethnohistorical research in archives around the country focusing on the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) and Santee Dakota examining culture change, drinking patterns, diseases, and the Peyote Religion.
