About Thomas Holiday

Hi, I'm Tom, a motivated software engineer with a diverse skill set who is eager to use technology to make a positive impact on the world. I am currently working with Güralp Systems where my main responsibility is designing and developing a cross-platform, user-friendly Qt-driven Desktop application;'Discovery', that allows users to interface with their Güralp seismic devices. Every day at Güralp is different, so I am also involved in embedded systems programming in C, creating a SaaS solution that harnesses AWS and Red Hat Linux, scripting in Python, tackling networking tasks, and fixing bugs and testing across all these areas. This wide spectrum of activity across different levels of programming is the best crash course in software engineering. Recently completing 2024’s Advent of Code made me interested again in harnessing higher-level languages to solve more abstract problems. This is what got me into programming in the first place in 2021 when I built a blockchain system using python. From here I become interested in web development and built several applications using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js), most notably learnfrenchvocab.co.uk, a French vocabulary learning app which makes the process of learning vocab more engaging. I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2021 with a first class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. My wide range of life experiences from working as an English-Spanish translator to making short films, to teaching English enable me to thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
