About Thomas Huelsmann

Thomas Hülsmann works presently as Visiting Researcher at the University of South Africa on invitation of the Institute of Open Learning (IODL) and The School of Graduate Studies. Thomas holds a MSc Mathematics (University of Bielefeld Germany, 1976), a MA International Development with a specialization in Distance Education (Institute of Education in London, UK, 1995), and PhD (University of Oldenburg, 2004). He worked for more than a decade in various African countries as teacher, teacher educator or schoolbook developer (Sudan, Zimbabwe and Madagascar). He was Research Officer at the International Research Foundation of Open Learning (IRFOL) and one of the Directors of the MDE (Master of Distance Education and E-learning), a joint program offered by the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. Thomas is serving on the editorial board of two major journals in distance education such as the Australian journal Distance Education and the French journal Distances et Médiations des Savoirs). Thomas Hülsmann worked as a consultant for the GTZ (now GIZ) in Sri Lanka and Vietnam, and for COL in Sierra Leone. He was keynote speaker at the Annual Conference of Asian Open Universities in Kunming (China) and, more recently (2014), at the Annual Conference National Association of Distance Education South Africa (NADEOSA) For the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) he developed a CD-Rom, introducing the basics of cost analysis. Thomas speaks and writes English and French.
