About Thomas Maschmeyer
Thomas Maschmeyer serves as Founding Director of the Laboratory of Advanced Catalysis for Sustainability. He is Honorary Distinguished Professor at the University of Cardiff and Honorary CSIRO Research Fellow. Until March 2017 he also served as Founding Director of the University’s new A$150m Australian Institute of Nanoscale Science and Technology (AINST, “Sydney Nano”). In 2011 he was elected Foreign Member of the Academia Europea, as well as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (AAS), the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). In 2014 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW, Australia’s oldest scientific society. He is Founding Chairman of Gelion Technologies (2015), a new high-performance battery university spin-out and co-founder of the low carbon/renewables start-ups Ignite Energy Resources (2006) and Licella (2007). Licella currently operates three joint ventures (in Canada, Canfor Pulp, the UK, Renew ELP, and Australia, iQRenew). He is also one of the founding Professors of Avantium (2001), a Dutch High-tech company now with 180+ employees, listed in March 2017 on the XAMS. He serves on the editorial/advisory boards of ten international journals and on the external advisory boards of the State Key Laboratory for Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics; the Cardiff Catalysis Institute and was President of the Catalysis Society of Australia (2010 – 2015). He has received many awards, including the CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Innovation and Science (2018), the RACI R.K. Murphy Medal for Industrial Chemistry (2018), New South Wales Science and Engineering Award for Renewable Energy Innovation (2013), the RACI Weickhardt Medal for Economic Contributions through Chemistry (2012), the RACI Applied Research Award (2011), the Le Févre Prize of the Australian Academy of Science for Outstanding Basic Research in Chemistry by a Scientist under 40 (2007).
