Background

About Thomas Mattijssen

I am an interdisciplinary socio-environmental scientist with a PhD in Environmental Governance and an MSc in Forest Nature Conservation. I currently have about 12 years of experience in applied and fundamental research, focusing on the interactions between humans and their spatial environment. While I mostly worked as a social scientist, I have an interdisciplinary background and am also familiar with environmental sciences. I am passionate about most aspects of my work and see myself as a naturally curious person with an interdisciplinary and creative approach to research. I am outgoing, networking and interested in the work of others, but I also like to think, read and write. I regularly publish in academic journals, but also aim to provide more accessible content to other audiences. I have held several research positions and worked on various topics over the years. Through these experiences, I have gained broad and applicable knowledge of the social sciences in the green spatial domain and am familiar with a broad range of social science theories. Content-wise, I have an affinity with debates around landscape, cultural history, water, agriculture, nature conservation and urban green space, as well as for with interactive policy processes and innovative governance. While I used to see myself primarily as a researcher, I my work has shifted towards project leadership,(co)management tasks, account management and acquisition in research years. You can find most of my scientific work as downloadable content on researchgate:
