About Thomas Otero

Growing up I have always been interested in technology with a focus on computers and have been programming computers since I was in high school. I learned C++ and Java while I was in high school and I loved it so much that I went to college for it. I studied computer science at the University of New Mexico and got a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Master of Science in Computer Science. When I was in my first semester of college I got my first Android phone and started learning how to create apps for the Android platform. I created various Android apps in my spare time as something fun to do. During my early years in college I published various Android apps to the Play Store with Nandroid Manager and Online Nandroid Backup being the most noteworthy. While in college I learned various programming languages and started really liking web development so I started learning JavaScript, html, CSS, PHP, GWT, and Java Servlets. For two semesters I took independent study to learn more about web development and created an employee management system for my semester project. I spent most of my undergrad working for UNM as first a gym attendant then a gym attendant supervisor which allowed me a lot of time to work on programming projects that I wanted to. During my last two semesters as an undergrad at UNM I showed my boss what I could do with creating Android apps so she gave me shot in creating a digital equipment checkout system for the equipment room. The app was huge hit so my boss and the director of the facility wanted to see what else I could do so I told them about my experience with web development. They wanted me to take over the management of the main Rec Services website as well as develop a new web service for them which I named RecWeb. The purpose of RecWeb was to move from a paper only system to a digital system. The first thing I moved to RecWeb was registration and management of Getaway Adventures. At this point I got my bachelors degree and was re hired at Rec Services as a full stack developer and an Android developer while getting my masters degree. During this time I expanded the capabilities of RecWeb and created many different supporting Android apps and kiosk systems. After college I continued to work for Rec Services as a Full Stack Developer as well as develop my own Android apps for the Android Wear OS smart watch that I got during the 2021 holiday season. I currently have four Wear OS apps published to the Google Play Store.
