About Thomas Patton

Thomas's practice focuses on complex intellectual property and business litigation involving a variety of technologies. His experience includes litigation regarding patent, trademark, and copyright infringement and validity, unfair competition, and trade secret misappropriation in a wide range of industries, including computer software, telecommunications, athletic apparel, life sciences and biotechnology, mechanical, roofing, and GPS products and systems. Thomas is also a registered patent attorney and has experience prosecuting patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Thomas has experience at all stages of complex intellectual property and commercial litigation in federal and state court. He has prepared pre-litigation analyses, including invalidity and infringement opinions, facilitated settlements, prepared and responded to complaints, drafted and responded to motions, prepared Markman briefings, argued hearings, deposed and defended witnesses, assisted, defended, and deposed experts, and managed all aspects of fact and expert discovery. He also participates in trial preparations and trial, including developing case and trial strategies. Thomas also advises clients on intellectual property protection policies, patent prosecution, patent harvesting, patent monetization strategies, and NDAs and other contracts. Thomas is dedicated to serving the community and maintains an active pro bono practice in which he provides a variety of legal services to clients who do not have the resources to pay customary legal fees. Thomas assists individuals seeking asylum, including assisting with asylum applications, arguing at various hearings, obtaining and renewing work authorizations, and obtaining and assisting country experts. He also served as lead counsel representing his asylum client at a merits hearing. Thomas taps into his background in engineering roots to understand his clients’ technologies. While pursuing his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Iowa State University, he served as an intern at a manufacturing company, assisting with inventory management and helping in any way he could, including driving a forklift and powder coating. Thomas also served as an intern at an engineering firm, working with an executive on project oversight, project closeout and preparations for arbitration. Thomas also served as a teaching assistant in engineering courses, through which he wrote, taught and graded labs for undergraduate and graduate engineering courses.
