Background
About Thomas Pfeiffer
DR. T. PAUL PFEIFFER THEATRE HISTORIAN, DIRECTOR, PLAYWRIGHT, ACTOR AND TEACHER With an academic career spanning thirty- five years at Salisbury, Dr. Pfeiffer has pursued his two loves – History and the Theatre - with advanced degrees from the University of Maryland in Theatre History and Directing and the Union Institute in Theatre History and Performance, both Magnum cum Laude. He has augmented these studies with numerous academic publications. He has professional training in diverse arenas from Renaissance and Baroque Dance to modern acting at the Herbert Berghoff Studio in New York. His professional training in acting Shakespeare was undertaken at the Folger Theatre in Washington, D.C. and at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. He combines these areas of expertise in teaching Theatre History and in Advanced Acting courses for the Bobbi Biron Theatre, which places emphasis on a strong foundation in Classical Theatre. Instrumental in establishing the new Department of Theatre and Dance, he now serves as Chair. Dr. Pfeiffer has acted for the Riverside Shakespeare Theatre in New York but entered British professional theatre as a playwright. In June, his one man show, ‘Apology for the Life of an Actor’ was given a special showcase at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s experimental theatre, ‘The Other Place.’ Both public and critics alike met the play with enthusiastic reception. Stephen Pimlott, Artistic Director of that theatre, described Pfeiffer’s writing as, “Brilliant.” The play also had a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where Dr. Pfeiffer acted it. Dr. Pfeiffer continues to write for the Theatre with successful adaptations of Henry Fielding’s Joseph Andrews, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Edward Ravenscrofts’ The London Cuckolds, and Plautus’ ‘The Brothers Menaechmi.’ His original play ‘The Sin that Kills’ based on the 16th century Scottish witch trials under King James VI, is currently seeking production.
