Experienced academic journal editor. Currently an Executive Editor at BMJ Open and BMJ Public Health. Previously Associate Editor at PLOS ONE in the Public Health and Medicine team. Before entering Publishing I spent more than ten years as a lab based Researcher focused on neuroimmunology, development and nanomedicine. I am originally from Guildford in Southern England where I worked as a Healthcare Assistant before studying Molecular Biology at the University of Sheffield. I then completed a PhD at the University of Bristol researching the placental origin of neurodevelopmental conditions during hypoxic insults such as pre-eclampsia. I developed a nanoparticle based antioxidant treatment that protected against foetal damage from pre-eclampsia, which I patented and formed the basis of a spin out company. I worked there as a consultant before it was sold to a larger pharmaceutical company. I then joined the Dementia Research Institute and helped set up the new research unit at Cardiff University. During my career I have worked in academic, industrial and clinical settings in the UK, Canada, Japan, USA and Norway. My driving passion has always been learning and the belief that knowledge should be universally available.
