Background

About Thomas R. Hilder

I am Associate Professor in Ethnomusicology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim. My research focuses on popular and traditional musics of the Nordic countries and LGBT ensembles in Europe, drawing on current debates within postcolonialism, digital media studies and gender and queer theory. I obtained my PhD in ethnomusicology at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2011. My monograph ‘Sámi Musical Performance and the Politics of Indigeneity in Northern Europe’ (2015) examines the role of Sámi popular music in shaping the politics of sovereignty, time, place, cultural heritage and transnationalism. I am lead editor of the book ‘Music, Indigeneity, Digital Media’ (2017) and I am co-editor of the volume ‘Music and Cultural Memory in post-1989 Europe’ (in preparation). In addition, I have published on Indigenous feminism, festivals, TV music documentaries, Eurovision and archives and repatriation. Currently, I am editor for the European Journal of Musicology (EJM) and committee member of the European Seminar in Ethnomusicology (ESEM). I co-founded and am currently chair of the LGBTQ+ Music Study Group. In 2015 I was programme committee member for the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) Annual Conference in 2015. I organised the Berlin ethnomusicology research group, BEAM (2012-5), the International Doctoral Workshop in Ethnomusicology at the Center for World Music (2012-4) and the symposium Music, Indigeneity, Digital Media, at Royal Holloway (2010). I regularly present at international conferences and am often invited to speak at academic events, including as a keynote speaker at a symposium on Nordic popular music at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory, Copenhagen in 2013. At NTNU, I teach BA and MA courses on ethnomusicology, Nordic music, music and globalisation, and music, gender and sexuality. I currently supervise BA and MA students with projects on a range of topics especially those employing ethnographic method.
