About Thomas Rhoades
As a Seamen's Church Institute maritime chaplain, I serve the U. S. Merchant Marine Fleet by providing pastoral and trauma care. As Sr. Chaplain, I coordinate pastoral care responses by our Chaplain Associates who live on the coasts and along the inland waterways system. To expand our ministry, I recruit and develop spiritual leaders to serve mariners, their families, and shoreside personnel. SCI chaplains visit vessels and support the maritime industry, and connect faith communities and mental health services to mariners, their families and shoreside support. As institutional chaplains we assess, refer, and support without concern for religious views. We focus on the human aspect of people being self-aware of our own biases.
