About Thomas Simms

South Africa and our divided past have contributed to my interest in architecture and the role space plays in our interactions and connection. I have a creative outlook and while I love design, I’m also an analytical thinker. I firmly believe that buildings and structures are placeholders that bring people together, whether it be a museum or a home, they stimulate people to interrogate themselves and others. By bringing people together you create communities and bring diverse discourse to those environments. Especially within the context of South Africa, I believe that Architecture could be a potent transformational tool. As a young white South African, I consider it one of my responsibilities to contribute to my nation's growth and incorporate spaces for everyone to feel welcome in, contributing positively to the healing of the social psyche of our country.Architecture is a catalyst for positive and dynamic change, even transformation. This excites me and in the course of my work I hope to be able to make a contribution to change for the greater good, for those around me and for myself- Thomas Simms
