Background
About Thomas Sweitzer
I am a multi-talented artist with a deep commitment to the power of creativity and healing. As an accomplished actor, writer, and creative director, my passion for storytelling and the transformative potential of music is evident in my work, particularly in my emotionally resonant show,"20 Seconds."In addition to my artistic endeavors, I've also made a significant contribution to the field of music therapy. I hold a Graduate Certificate in Music Therapy from Shenandoah University and a Master’s in Music Therapy from Berklee College of Music. My dedication to music therapy has led me to co-found A Place to Be, a non-profit organization that has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of families in Northern Virginia through the healing power of music. Moreover, I have developed therapeutic musical productions that focus on themes of acceptance, diversity, and empathy, spreading messages of hope, resilience, and unity in schools and communities. My notable work, the Rock Opera "A Will to Survive," is dedicated to raising awareness about suicide prevention and has graced the stage at The Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater. My commitment to education is reflected in my role as an adjunct professor at Shenandoah University, where I help shape the next generation of creative minds in the field of music therapy. I also offer consulting services as a Music Therapist across the country, contributing to the advancement of music therapy practices.Beyond my individual achievements, my journey is closely intertwined with A Place to Be, a nationally recognized therapeutic arts organization. Together, we create inclusive communities that promote optimal health, a sense of belonging, and hope through the power of community, performance, and creative arts therapies. In addition to my extensive career in the arts and music therapy, I am honored to have been a part of the film "Music Got Me Here." The film chronicles the remarkable recovery of Forrest Allen, a young man who overcame a traumatic brain injury through the power of clinical music therapy. I played a pivotal role in this journey as Forrest's music therapist, which has allowed me to not only be part of Forrest's story but also feel like part of his family. This film is a testament to the belief that humanity possesses the stretch, resilience, and love to endure the most challenging of times, expanding the horizons of what is possible through the healing power of music and storytelling.
