Background

About Thomas Walker

Over the course of the last two years, I have become increasingly passionate about the application of mathematics to statistics, with a particular focus on machine learning. This passion was initially ignited by the impact of these technologies, for example, I observed the effectiveness of statistical analysis and machine learning for particle physics research through an extended project I completed during sixth form. Then, as I started university, I became more literate in the mathematics underlying these applications. I was able to make connections between the theory and the results seen in practice, which motivated me to gain a more theoretical perspective of these tools. I have made it one of my priorities to pursue this goal throughout my degree and take on any opportunities that progress me toward this. So far, I am very glad I have taken this approach as rather than restricting my exposure to a portion of mathematics it has instead broadened my mathematical knowledge and prompted several directions of learning. For example, recently I have become aware of the role abstract algebra plays in deep learning. I was fortunate enough to arrange a UROP for the summer of my first year. It focussed on how programming languages generate pseudo-random numbers. The project involved exploring the theory and developing a repository of code to align the process of pseudo-random number generation across the languages. Upon first hearing the project put forward by my supervisor I thought the task would be straightforward, and I had a clear vision of the outcome of the project. However, upon initial investigation, I was taken aback by the number of intricate details that were involved in, what I believed to be, a simple task (of generating pseudo-random numbers). Throughout the project, my overall perspective was evolving as I realised some of my preconceptions were not entirely as I thought. Ultimately this feeling is what inspired me to continue my exploration and at this point, I realised how much I relished the work of research. I find myself working effectively in a research-orientated environment. I am excited at the way mathematics provides a framework to expand upon and improve ideas. It provides the basis for exploration and allows for progress to be made. Outside of the course, I have developed an interest in mathematical exposition. I frequently tutor individuals in secondary schools, helping with GCSEs and A Levels. Furthermore, I develop material for the Imperial Math Wiki, creating summaries, and worked solutions to problems.
