Background
About Thomas Weimann
I am a Disputes Partner with more than 30 years of experience with Clifford Chance, Herbert Smith Freehills and Jones Day based in Düsseldorf, the administrative seat of the heartland of German industry. I have ample experience in managing my own law firm, WEIMANN.LEGAL. I am thankful for having received a rock solid Litigation education with my first firm, Pünder. My mentor, Werner Metzner spent the three years before his retirement to educate me in the field of general litigation. Joachim Feldges and Thomas Reimann gave me close insights into IP Litigation, Oliver Axster eductated me on Antitrust Litigation. After 25 years with Clifford Chance and building the Düsseldorf disputes practice to a three partner, 15 lawyers successful and multimillion business, I made a move to a newcomer on the German market: Herbert Smith Freehills. Reverting my original retirement decision in 2015, I accepted the challenge for a limited period to bring this global brand to Düsseldorf and to assist in building up the practice in Germany. This period came to an end in March 2021. In September 2021, I joined the Düsseldorf office of Jones Day. I was counsel to some of the most prominent cases in Germany and contributed to the further development of arbitration in Germany by creating the "Arbitrator’s Nightmare". One of the first space arbitrations in 2004 on a set of sattelites gave me a different view on what modern technolgy makes possible. I am active in Post M&A arbitration and have been considered an expert in medical malpractice (with close to 100 cases over the years). I am most active in particular in the power and infrastructure business with extensive experience in power plants, turbines, windfarms, converter platforms, airports, railways and road construction. Even though 30 years of experience could not substitute engineering studies, I have a very well developed gut feeling how not to plan and construct certain projects. The problems and failures I have seen often go back to similar root causes and I am positive I have seen most of the problems that can trouble a project. Besides this I have been arbitrator in about 90 cases. I entertain strong links to China and the APAC region, which were fostered by 10 years in the management of the Chinese-European Arbitration Centre.
