About Thong Nguyen
As the Community Forest Management Director at the USAID Sustainable Forest Management Project, I lead the design and implementation of strategies and interventions on forests, land-use, and NTFP value chains. I focus on integrating environmental sustainability with community development for long-term impact, supporting more than 140 local communities in Vietnam to sustainably manage natural forests and forest landscape restoration. With over 15 years of experience in sustainable forest management, I have a strong background in program management, REDD+, FLEGT/VPA and participatory approaches. I have successfully managed and facilitated GEF projects, including a €5 million EU-funded project on Integrated Sustainable Landscape Management and a $6.6 million project on integrating biodiversity and natural resource management objectives into socio-economic planning within Vietnam’s biosphere reserves. I am passionate about empowering local communities to take ownership of their forest resources and promoting sustainable forest management practices.
