Background
About Tim Conder
Educator/Professor• Ethnographer • Community Organizer • Writer • Speaker/Trainer I am a Co-Founder and now Co-President of the Black Mountain School of Theology & Community — a new educational institution that counters systems of oppression and alienation through practices of co-learning and co-action to advance the pursuit of higher goods, the formation of durable communities, and the generation of faithful, structural change. With an interdisciplinary Ph.D.(Cultural Studies - Religion, Anthropology, & Education), I have also taught courses on qualitative research methods, academic writing/higher education success, community organizing, ethics, and leadership/mentorship at a wide variety of universities, graduate schools, and seminaries. As a qualitative researcher, I have lengthy research and teaching experience in ethnography (postcritical ethnography, theological ethnography, autoethnography, and meta-ethnography), narrative research, oral histories, and critical media analysis. My research has focused on theo-political social movements, the formation of activist identities, community organizing, and a critical race analysis of mentoring. I have served as Co-Chair, Strategy Team Member, and Co-Clergy Caucus Chair for Durham CAN (Congregations, Associations, & Neighborhoods) which is part of IAF (the Industrial Areas Foundation) for over 15 years. I've helped lead successful actions and campaigns in affordable housing, living wage jobs, educational reforms, and criminal justice reform (securing the nations first policy of written consent for automobile searches by the Durham Police Department). I've also helped lead national campaigns on lending reform/justice and gun violence prevention. I am the author of three trade books; the co-editor and chapter author of an academic text on the politics of race, gender, and social class in mentoring students of color in primarily white communities and whitestream educational systems; and a contributor in variety of peer-reviewed and popular texts. I am a frequent speaker and consultant in the intersection of education, anthropology, and religion and a frequent trainer in faith-based organizing.
