About Tim Cubitt

I’m an experienced criminologist whose research focuses on police misconduct, child sexual exploitation, radicalisation and violent extremism. I have previously held positions at the Australian Institute of Criminology, and the New South Wales Police Force. My work on police misconduct includes the application of machine learning and network analytics to identify patterns of serious misconduct within law enforcement agencies across the world. Recent studies I have conducted examine typologies of officers who commit misconduct across 3 countries, gender differences in serious police misconduct, and the effectiveness of vetting processes in identifying high-risk officers. I have consulted to agencies across Australia, the UK and USA on measuring police misconduct and officer risk. Notably, I am one of only a handful who employ data science methodologies, machine learning and network science, to measure police misconduct. In relation to child sexual exploitation, my research has investigated the dynamics of online abuse, including live streaming of child sexual abuse, sexual extortion among adolescents, and the use of artificial intelligence in both perpetrating and combating such crimes. More recently my work has examined child sexual offenders on the darknet. Regarding radicalisation and violent extremism, my research has explored the vulnerability to radicalisation during the COVID-19 timeframe, the influence of conspiracy theories, and the role of online domains in radicalisation. My recent research has focused on changes to the prevalence and ways in which extremist content is engaged with online. You can find my publications here: & hl=en
