Background
About Tim Delaney
Tim Delaney is an attorney and policy advocate who has successfully argued in the U.S. Supreme Court, testified before Congress, negotiated in the White House, prosecuted civil rights matters, and helped impeach and remove a governor. Since 2008 Tim has applied his diverse leadership experiences in law, government, and nonprofits to serve nonprofits and communities across the country as leader of the National Council of Nonprofits, which champions, informs, and connects the largest network of charitable nonprofits in North America to advance the public good. After graduating from Yale and earning joint degrees in law and public affairs from the University of Texas, Tim became a partner at a multistate law firm where he blocked removal of more than people from voting rosters, engaged in media law to help the public know what their governments were doing, and led the firm’s government relations practice. Appointed as Arizona’s Solicitor General and later Chief Deputy Attorney General, he led his state to win several cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and prosecuted the removal of several local elected officials for breaching the public trust. In 2001, Tim founded the Center for Leadership, Ethics & Public Service, crisscrossing the country championing positive ethics, advancing civic engagement, and promoting democracy. Now as President & CEO of the National Council of Nonprofits, Tim helps nonprofits identify emerging trends, engage in critical policy issues, exchange proven practices across state borders, and achieve greater impact in local communities throughout the country. Numerous organizations have formally recognized Tim’s community and professional contributions, including the National Association of Attorneys General (Marvin Award for leadership and service, and co-recipient of the Best Brief Award for legal writing in the U.S. Supreme Court), LBJ School of Public Affairs (Distinguished Public Service Award – alumnus of the year), ASU School of Public Affairs (Faculty Associate Award for teaching excellence), the City of Phoenix (which dedicated the Delaney Family Playground in recognition of years of public service), and the NonProfit Times (named to its "Power & Influence Top 50" nonprofit leaders in the country 11 times and the “Influencer of the Year” in 2023).
