About Tim Faris

I hold an MFA in Photography from the Herron School of Art & Design at IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis), in addition to a BA from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. I have worked to gain a great deal of technical understanding and skill throughout the course of these degrees. My academic and professional careers have been built around photography. This passion started during my undergraduate years, when I studied photography and architectural design. These two areas of focus (and others) provided me with the foundational understanding to build my own practice. I now have four years of teaching experience in photography. Most recently, I have taken on teaching a course in Computer Imagery. This course involves entry-level coding awareness, intermediate photo manipulation techniques, and 3D rendering. These varied teaching opportunities have provided me with a broad range of skill sets in analog and digital photography, various printing techniques, and collaborative design. I currently work a second job buying used photography equipment for a company called UsedPhotoPro. This position has exposed me to an incredible range of photographic technology, and I am considered an expert in the industry. In order to be successful in this job, I must be able to identify cameras and optics from any era, understand whether or not they are fully operational, and assess the market value of the equipment. In addition to my job experience, I have been involved in designing prototype cameras. These prototypes have ranged from basic camera obscuras all the way to mobile webcams housed in 3D printed chassis. I have a valuable understanding of imaging systems, and experience with refining them to deliver the best possible quality. As of Spring 2024, I have begun a third, part-time appointment at the University of San Diego as their 2D Facilities Technician in the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History.
