History will view early 2021 as the moment the blockchain truly hit the mainstream through NFTs. With NBA Top Shots realizing over $230m of trades in its first 30 days, and the sale of Beeple’s digital art for $69m Blockchain created its “Pokémon Go“moment – through NFTs (non-fungible tokens). NFTs bring a layer of democratic empowerment previously not seen. Transparency and accountability together with the programmability of money through Decentralized finance present new blended business and finance models that open up- mainstream audiences to permanently digital ownership of (initially digital) collectible assets- struggling creatives can now create ongoing repeating, royalty streams- publishers and producers can breathe fresh air into tiring models and - disenfranchised communities can express their powerful, artistic voices more effectively, secure in the knowledge that the financial transactions are secure, and auditable. Together, NFT’s and De-Fi have the power to transform culture, both popular and traditional, globally. I feel privileged to have been at the leading edge of this transformative wave since 2015, working with some incredible and passionate individuals across the globe. While I have questioned the timing of the blockchain journey on many occasions, I have been sustained by some incredible fellow travelers on the volatile blockchain journey who are unified by one great mantra - to leverage the transformative power of the blockchain for the greater good… As a proud member of the Old Guard (OG), I am delighted to see blockchain’s time has finally come… and so has mine.
