You should become a doctor or a lawyer” - Said every Filipino parent ever Having been able to grow up in both New Zealand and the Philippines I quickly realised the importance that money and a “good” job can have in your lifestyle and reputation. Although I know my parents and grandparents meant well, this traditional view of success and the way to wealth is not as black and white to me as it may seem for them. I knew there had to be other ways to wealth. Thus marking the start of my personal finance journey. After a mixture of a few years of University, countless hours of YouTube, and Audiobooks. I quickly realised that there is more than one way to grow wealth and one of those ways is through investing. One of the things I realised, after discussions with friends and family, is that there is a sheer lack of education in financial well-being in the country. In High school, I was not taught how to invest, budget or even the concept of compound interest. A lot of my peers from my hometown and University are more focused on the now rather than the long term. To enjoy their lives while they are young and not think about investing until they are older. While there is no clear answer on how one should spend their time and money. There is one thing for certain, when it comes to growing wealth, the earlier you start the more it can compound into something big. There should be no reason that you can enjoy the now while thinking about the future. At Kernel Wealth, I am able to use my passion for personal finance to help increase awareness among Kiwis and to help grow their long term wealth through the use of low-cost index funds. A staple, and often recommended tool by many legendary investors this is a great starting block for a lot of Kiwis young and old. I’m glad that I’m able to apply both my passion and education to help Kernel Wealth grow its brand and help increase the conversations about money in New Zealand.
