Background
About Tim Ryder
Technology has always been more than just a tool for me—it’s a means to drive efficiency, enhance security, and empower teams to do their best work. Throughout my career at Indiana University, I’ve had the privilege of leading IT security, systems administration, and help desk operations, building and restructuring teams, streamlining processes, and ensuring regulatory compliance across multiple campuses. My passion lies in bridging the gap between technology and people, fostering collaboration and implementing solutions that make a lasting impact. One of my most rewarding challenges was spearheading the creation of the Research Security Office (RSO). As one of only four people chosen to establish this group, I helped build an infrastructure that enabled researchers to pursue federal funding while ensuring compliance with stringent security regulations. From setting up cloud-based security monitoring in Azure to developing policies aligned with NIST and CMMC frameworks, I played a key role in shaping a secure research environment. Prior to my work with RSO, I managed client support for the VP of Research Information Technology, leading teams across Bloomington and Indianapolis. I focused on transforming IT support from a reactive function into a proactive, customer-focused operation. By restructuring teams, improving documentation, and strengthening cross-discipline skills, we not only enhanced employee engagement but also significantly improved service delivery. Managing a IT lifecycle budget, I streamlined procurement, optimized conference room technology, and introduced cost-effective solutions that benefited faculty, staff, and students. My leadership journey includes supporting the Geological Sciences Department, where I tackled an IT audit that had flagged major inefficiencies. Within a short time, I turned a struggling operation into a model of efficiency—relocating servers, virtualizing infrastructure, and improving service accessibility for researchers and students. This experience solidified my belief that the right mix of technology, leadership, and strategic planning can drive meaningful change, even in environments resistant to it. With a history degree as my foundation and a wealth of technical certifications and trainings—including Microsoft Azure Administrator and CompTIA Security+—I bring both analytical thinking and technical expertise to every challenge. My goal is always to create IT environments that are not just functional, but forward-thinking, secure, and adaptable to the ever-evolving needs of the people they serve.
