About Tim Schmitter

A passion for science is the driver of my professional career.Starting as bench scientist with hands on experience in active and passive immunization against bacterial diseases to nowadays managing evidence-based human clinical trials for developing probiotic oral care products. No matter which indication and industry setting I always was directly responsible for bioanalytical method development leading labs up to three technicians. I started my professional career as scientist for ACE BioSciences (Denmark, Odense), developing vaccines based on sub-proteinaceous fragments against infectious diseases. I developed methods for the detection of putative antigen targets on pathogens and generated functional assays to validate efficacy of putative immunogens. Here I gained first project management experience leading a team of 3 technicians for developing a combinational vaccine targeting the causative agents of travellers’ diarrheae, i.e. enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Campylobacter jejuni.Thereafter I joined “SmartMab” a spinoff at the University of Wuerzburg developing a humanized monoclonal antibody as immunotherapy against Staphylococcus aureus. As Project Manager I implemented a professional project infrastructure within a university setting regarding meeting culture, professional documentation and SOP reporting. In parallel I coordinated the preclinical development of the humanized antibody in collaboration with several international CROs initiating cell line development and fermentation on a gram scale. As Researcher my team implemented potency- and release assays for our lead target, characterized potential new immunogenic hits assuring surface exposure and sequence homology as well as freedom to operate regarding intellectual property.Today I am working for the Symrise AG, a world leader for the production of fine chemicals, flavors, fragrances and cosmetic ingredients. Since 2015 I work as Research Manager “Oral Care and Clinical Research” developing probiotic bacteria as active ingredient for oral care products. At Symrise I lead a laboratory for the validation and characterization of potential probiotic bacteria developing methods for identification, quantification and quality assessment of our lead strains while elucidating their mode of actions in different formulations. As Project Manager I coordinate proof-of-concept human clinical trials adhering to ICH/GCP and frequently discuss intellectual property issues and regulatory assessment across departments.
