About Tim Spring

Healthcare improvement and innovation. Why do I work in healthcare improvement? Following an early career in exercise rehabilitation, leisure management and sales, I have found a real interest in solving complex problems within healthcare. Every 36 hours 1 million people use NHS services in England and virtually all of us use healthcare services at some point in our lives. Inefficient systems impede care delivery, causing waste and unnecessary harm; over the past 10 years I have worked to improve the quality and productivity of healthcare systems for the benefit of patients, staff and provider organisations. What do I do? I deliver safety, flow, quality and productivity improvements by helping healthcare systems to embrace improvement science, technology and innovation. I typically work with teams to diagnose the root-cause of problems. We then design and develop solutions and deliver improvements. How do I do it? I improve services by concentrating on systems, people and processes. From a technical perspective, I develop solutions using improvement science and systems engineering techniques; and from a people perspective, I help teams to adopt new ways of working by applying organisational development, change management and behavioural science principles. In 2018, I completed a Master's degree in Healthcare Management, Leadership & Innovation through Plymouth Medical School, achieving a distinction, and alongside the degree I became the first qualified Healthcare Systems Engineer (Level 1) in the South West (see for more details). More recently I qualified as a Prosci Change Management Practitioner whilst designing and delivering change management plans as part of a large-scale healthcare transformation programme in Devon.
