The overarching theme in my work is the focus on the inflammatory response in fetal and neonatal organs to perinatal stress, including intra-amniotic infections, perinatal hypoxia-ischemia and mechanical ventilation, and its negative sequelae throughout live (DoHAD). I gain insight into the mechanisms responsible for the association between these clinically relevant perinatal stressors and adverse organ outcomes by using unique longitudinal preclinical models and state of the art ex vivo and in vitro models. My research group aims to improve these outcomes of babies with potential clinical immune-modulatory and regenerative interventions including immunotherapy, pharmacological nutrition and cell-based therapeutics. This combined work strongly supports the concept that interventions with immunomodulatory and regenerative capacities have great potential to give premature children, suffering from perinatal stress, a healthy start.
