Background

About Timothy C Stamnitz

In September 2009 I was awarded the Master of Science in Physics at the University of New Hampshire. That was the beginning of a new career teaching science and math at the community college and/or high school level. My previous work as an Engineering Physicist in fiber-optic communications for the US Navy and Science Applications International led to foundation of a high-tech startup, Global Photon Systems Inc, where I served as President/CEO for 7 ½ years. The experience of applying physics and math in a high-tech company provided me with a unique perspective on how to teach and motivate students in STEM Education. The past 14 years I’ve taught AP physics, physics, astronomy, physical science, AP calculus, AP chem, chemistry, algebra, geometry, environmental science, and biology at the high school and community college levels. Now, after 6 1/2 years teaching high school math and science-including AP Physics, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics-at Balboa School in Escondido CA, it is now my privilege to teach college physics in a multicultural environment at Palomar College. Prior to entering the Grad-Physics program at UNH, my B.S.E. in Engineering Physics from the University of Michigan enabled me to improve the capabilities of fiber-optic networks in both the Navy and the private-sector by employing DWDM and telecom/IP gateways to achieve faster more efficient internetworking. Also, as a senior engineer I helped expand the application of autonomous undersea vehicles (“AUVs”) to seafloor mapping and fault-location in undersea fiber-optic cable systems, and helped Scripps Institution of Oceanography develop an AUV to monitor climate change impacts and adaptation, ocean pollution, sea level rise, seafloor mapping and exploration, and oceanographic data collection in general. My current goal is to improve my students’ understanding of the fundamental principles of physics and mathematics, such that they can apply them to the development of advanced technologies that benefit the environment, the people, and thus the planet. My fervent hope is to expand the boundaries of knowledge, investigate new intellectual territories, and set an example of teaching and sharing in this adventure with students and teachers everywhere.
