About Timothy Callaghan

I am an Assistant Professor of health policy and politics in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Texas A&M University School of Public Health. I also serve as Director of Evaluation for the Southwest Rural Health Research Center and as Chair of the PhD program in Health Services Research at Texas A&M University. I received my PhD from the University of Minnesota in 2016 in political science, emphasizing the fields of American politics and political methodology, with a minor in political psychology. My research focuses on how politics, policy, and place work together to influence health access and outcomes in America. I have conducted extensive research on state political decision-making under the Affordable Care Act, studying state decisions about Medicaid expansion. My research agenda also emphasizes individual health attitudes and behavior – investigating public behavior surrounding important topics including vaccination, Medicaid, and the opioid epidemic. Finally, I carry out research on access and outcomes for vulnerable groups including rural populations, individuals with developmental disabilities, and immigrants in the United States.
