Background

About Timothy Captain

My leadership and scholarly background revolve around the intersection of how leaders can effectively bring change to their organizations and the how organizations can innovate to serve the good of the community around them. As a religious leader, I have led multiple churches in their efforts to engage and serve community members. As a pastor in the San Diego region, I led a church to care for the holistic health of its congregants and community members over the course of a decade. I grew efforts to combat food insecurity and led the organization to become one of the regions largest food bank distributors, giving away pounds of food annually. In seeing the community's need for high quality early childhood education, I oversaw the funding, construction, and operation of the city's largest early learning center, simultaneously providing equitable employment to women of color. In these and other efforts, I led our organization to face challenges (including the Covid-19 pandemic) with innovation to maximize people and resources to see our community flourish. This leadership experience led me to opportunities to teach in higher education and do private research to support the work of other leaders who are seeking to lead organizations that benefit their communities. I greatly enjoy developing and equipping leaders to succeed by considering the importance of their own holistic wellbeing and leading ethically. I love helping organizations discover new ways to work together around common goals. I am overjoyed to teach students, walking alongside them in developing their knowledge and skills to lead change in non-profits and businesses.
